Apple Is Offering a Replacement Program for 1TB iMac Seagate HDD Failures

Apple has acknowledge a 1TB Seagate HDD failure issue affecting iMacs sold between May 2011 and June 2011. They are now providing a replacement program to anyone who has bought the affected hard drives and will replace free of charge. Official quote from Apple:

Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge.

Apple is contacting affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program.  If you have not been contacted, but think you have a 1TB Seagate hard drive, you can enter your serial number below to see if it's part of this program.

Main Hard Drive In New iMacs Can't Be Upgraded

 

According to OWC, Apple has changed how the main hard drive SATA power connector, and the firmware on the hard drive. The SATA power connector has switched from a normal 4-pin power to 7-pin power that combines temperature monitoring and some other kind of connectivity between the main board and the drive. Because of this you will not be able to upgrade the HDD yourself and half to go with Apple. If you try to replace with a 4-pin HDD it will cause AHT (Apple Hardware Test) to fail and not essentially boot, and cause the HDD fan's to spin at 100% speed. Let's hope this is something that they are testing and not moving to other lines of mac's.

Apple Updates iMac With Thunderbolt, Faster Everything

There it is, Apple has refreshed the iMac line of desktop computer with better and faster hardware all in the same aluminum enclosure. No new screen sized were added to the new 2011 lineup of iMacs and the 21.5" and 27" are here to stay.  The new 21.5" (1920x1080) iMac starts at $1,199 and packs a 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card with 512MB of memory.

Apple's new 27" iMac starts at $1,699 and packs a 2560x1440 screen resolution with a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 4GB of memory and an AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of memory. All the new 2011 iMac now come standard with the new Thunderbolt port, one port on the 21.5" model and two on the 27" model. In addition to all this hardware bump, the new iMacs now have an HD FaceTime camera. 

New Sandy Bridge Equipped iMacs Due Next Week

Rumors are coming in fast and hard about an imminent refresh of Apple's iMac line due as early as next week. AppleInsider reports that the new iMacs will be updated with Intel's new Sandy Bridge family of processors as well as the new high-speed Thunderbolt port which will replace the current miniDisplay port. Rumors also suggest new display sizes and better AMD graphics cards.

Yesterdays prediction about new Mac Pros and iMacs seem to have come true. As if you pop over to the Apple Store right now there is the usual "Updating Store" notice which leads me to believe that they are going to update the long overdue desktop Macs.
